Rachida Dati, the French justice minister, has let it be known she intends to run for mayor of Paris, against Sarkozy's wishes.
The move suggests that Miss Dati, 43, whom Mr Sarkozy demoted by squeezing her out of the cabinet in exchange for a near-certain seat in the European parliament.
She plans to use her post as mayor of the chic 7th arrondissement, as well as her seat on the Paris city council, as a springboard to run for mayor of the capital in 2014.

Rachida Dati, sacked by Sarkozy 3 weeks after her giving birth, will run for the European Parliament in June. Dati is expected to resign after she wins a safe seat as an MEP.

Martine Aubry edged out Segolene Royal to win the leadership of the opposition French Socialist Party by 42 votes out of 139,000 on a 60% turnout.
She has vowed to take the party leftwards and no doubt into obscurity.
As labour minister in the late 1990s, Aubry drafted legislation creating the 35-hour working week, a flagship Socialist measure. She is the daughter of good old Jacques Delors.

Today France's Socialist party hold a run-off vote for its next leader, as Ségolène Royal and Martine Aubry battle to become the first woman to head the biggest party on the French left. In the initial vote yesterday, first place went to Royal with 43% of the vote. But it was not a big enough majority to win outright.
Aubry, the mayor of Lille (Jaques Delors daughter) and architect of France's 35-hour week, came second with 34%. The MEP Benoit Hamon took 22% and was knocked out of the next round.
