Director: Patrick Summers
Starring: Cristina Gallardo-Domas, Maria Zifchak, Marcello Giordani, Dwayne CroftLieutenant Pinkerton of the US Navy leases a house in Nagasaki harbour which comes with servants and a geisha wife named Cio-Cio-San, known as Madame Butterfly.
Unsure of his feelings for the girl, Pinkerton decides to go through with the marriage ceremony and says someday he will take a 'real', American wife. Three years later, Cio-Cio-San and her small child await Pinkerton's return, and she refuses an offer of marriage from the wealthy Prince Yamadori. Pinkerton arrives with Kate, his new wife. Grasping the situation, Cio-Cio-San agrees to give up the child but insists Pinkerton return for him. Butterfly takes out the dagger with which her father committed suicide, choosing to die with honour rather than live in shame. She stabs herself as Pinkerton calls her name. Cristina Gallardo-Domas returns to the title role of the late Anthony Minghella's stunning production, a new classic of the Met repertory, opposite Marcello Giordani.
Screenplay: Giacomo Puccini
